Here at Lynx Driving School, we have rated the top 10 cars to buy as a learner driver. These are rated on their insurance and tax bands as well as their exspense and reliability.
- Vauxhall Corsa - quite possibly the best car for any learner driver; reliable, relatively inexspensive and very low insurance costs. Easy to pick up and usually below £500.
- Renault Clio - quite a popular car amongst learner drivers; again reasonably easy to drive and affordable, with low insurance costs and easy to pick up for less than £500.
- Peugeot 206/7 - slightly more exspensive than the Corsa or Clio, but still a popular choice. Has been around for a number of years and has proven its worth. Slightly higher insurance costs and not so easy to pick up for less than £1,000, however, still a fantastic learners car - quite the modern choice.
- Peugeot 106/7 - in short, the baby version of the 206/7; slightly cheaper and again the modern choice. Small, compact and easy to handle make this car ideal for learners. Fairly cheap to buy and insure.
- Rover 100/Metro - not so popular but still a cheap and good all round car for learner drivers. Low insurance (can be as low as group 3) and cheap to pick up. However, rust can be a problem with this car and must be observed before buying.
- Ford Ka - another modern alternative for learner drivers; this model has only just recently been upgraded and continues to be produced. Is a very reliable car and easy to handle however it one of the more exspensive vehicles to buy, with fewer 2nd hand being sold.
- Nissian Micra - in short, the budget version of the Ford Ka or Corsa. Cheap to run, cheap to insure and cheap to buy make this another ideal candidate for any learner driver.
- Fiat Punto - smallest of the cars listed here (except for newer model) this car handles relatively well and comes with all your nice features for no extra cost (air con, 'city button' for lighter steering, etc). A reasonably stylish car and suitable for those who are 'fashion conscious'. Low insurance group.
- Rover 214 - reasonably popular with learner drivers; mid-range size, offering more room for passengars on those nights out. This car is a case of 'What you buy, is what you get'. Rust again can be a problem on older models, but generally this car is very reliable and suitable for those who want to drive something with a little more 'va va voom'. Insurance is reasonable for cars engine size and capacity.
- Citreon Saxo/C3 - budget version of the 106 and 206, cheap to buy, cheap to run, no thrills but a standard, reliable and long lasting vehicle. Reasonable insurance and running costs.
